Step 6: Agree on review dates

  • Set dates and times.
  • Stick to the specified dates.

Setting review dates demonstrates you are serious about turning the problem around. Three months is usually a sufficient time frame for an improvement plan but you should have regular reviews during that period.

Once you set the review dates stick to them – that in itself demonstrates the issue has priority in your mind.

These review meetings provide an opportunity to get together to review progress and decide on any changes to the plan to keep things on track.

During each review encourage the employee where they have done well but make clear you expect improvement on aspects of performance that are still below target.

Just as in the beginning, maintain a positive attitude and don’t threaten the employee.
